The Gold Post Box Cycle
Many who know me will know I have a mild obsession with the Olympics (and now Paralympics) and revelled in being a Games Maker. It was suggested to me by my step nephew in law, Adrian, just after the Paralympics finished in September 2012 that I cycle round the 100 golden post boxes along with as many London 2012 venues as possible. So for 2014 I will be back on my bicycle, accompanied again by Chris Britton, to take up this new challenge. To my knowledge, this will be a unique challenge yet to be completed before. I am not even sure if anyone has visited all 111 boxes. For those who know their London 2012 facts we won 65 gold medals – but there are 111 boxes as each medallist within the team events has a box, plus there’s a few extra’s for different reasons (i.e. at Stoke Mandeville, where the first ever Paralympics took place in 1948). We will also visit the three boxes in Northern Ireland – which were for three Irish gold medallists.
To complete the challenge, we have plotted a route covering an estimated 2,994.2 miles over 27 days (an average 111 miles a day) starting in Penzance on 31 May and finishing in Kingston upon Hull on 26 June, which will include ferry crossings to Sark, in the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.
We will be fundraising for three charities this year between us – Sport Relief, ParalympicsGB and Tree of Hope – who support children with Cerebral Palsy. More details about each charity can be found on the Charity page. We are hoping to link up with Gold medallists on route and also visit (or pass) as many of the venues used as is possible, including cycling through the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Below are details of the final route. Each day we have a support vehicle and will be staying with friends/family, or friends of friends. Come along and support us, cheers us, cycle with us etc. It would be great to see people if we pass near you. Note we expect to travel at around 10-15mph and start at 8am each day, 7am June 8th and 9th. This gives an approximate way to work out when we will appear but keep an eye on the tracker too.
